Its been a while since Asics took the top gong in one of our Shoe Buyers Guides but the reaction to this shoe was uniformly one of delight and this won Best In Test in our current Spring/Summer 21 Guide. Jeff: The Nimbus has been ASICS big neutral daily trainer with some slight stability features. Because of the excellent forefoot flex the shoe feels just natural to me - besides its amount of protection and weight. The Nimbus 23 on the other hand achieves just the opposite. I recently reviewed the Vomero 15 and I was disappointed with it because of its firm forefoot which didnt feel like a max-cushioned trainer. The Nimbus has been ASICS big neutral daily trainer with some slight stability features. I believe the reason for that are the deep flex grooves on the outsole (more to follow). Ride: 9 (50%) Fit: 9 (30%) Value: 8 (15%) Style: 8 (5%). Filler miles. Jeff: My last Nimbus before the 23, the 21s outsole features a much more prominent TRUSTIC arch insert, and has a more dense and less flexible midsole/outsole. Thank you. But my young running career just started 3 years ago with a company run which I joined together with some colleagues in 2017. Jeff: Very similar shoes, the N23 adds some heft and a little more squish, but takes an okay ride and makes it even more okay. I cant really comment on the breathability of the upper, because its like 50 degrees right now, so its not like my feet are getting that hot.
Sounds like the Nimbus might be what Im looking for. Robbe is the Senior Editor/Review Manager for BITR. I really like the looks of the organic pattern of different shades of purple-ish / grey / blue with the pop of the strong cyan around the logo overlays.. I never in my wildest dreams thought Id say this about a Nimbus, but I almost had as much fun running in the Nimbus as in the Triumph. Theres also some GEL in the forefoot, as well as pillars to help stabilize and return energy. Head to head against the Nimbus Lite it resembles plush, but going up against other brands' big mileage daily trainers, it approaches the firm side of things. It runs very smoothly, and has lots of comfortable aspects, and overall it seems pretty good - but the big mileage daily trainer is being overrun by great to truly amazing shoes, so pretty good is forgettable in comparison. I still think the Triumph 18 is the overall better shoe because its more durable and I didnt get any foot fatigue in it.
Named after a rain cloud, the Nimbus is supposed to be Asics softest, most cushioned trainer but the Nimbus 19 was firm, the ride was boring and it was expensive. Easy miles. Many asics nimbus/kayano fans just wear these are regular plush everyday shoes fine with the comfort at slow speeds but these are not designed for a fast pace as its just too squishie (non responsive). He has a PR's of 4:07 marathon and 5K at 23:39. It is a very smooth ride for a neutral midfoot or heel striking runner. Another 80km and the rubber could be worn down right to the midsole foam in that area. I had nimbus 22 but my problem is the upper material. It was also designed to have softer GEL cushioning and more heel compression. While I for sure think the ASICS Nimbus 23 runs just fine and smoothly I actually think that especially the toe off is outstanding for this shoe. I wouldnt hesitate to run my long runs up to 30k in it as long as I didnt plan to push the pace too much. I really like the looks of the organic pattern of different shades of purple-ish / grey / blue with the pop of the strong cyan around the logo overlays.. Asics had filled in the arch area to eliminate the wide gap that was present in the Nimbus 22. The ASICS Gel Cumulus is a great choice if you are looking for a plush, The ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ is still one of the top-tier marathon racers. Its best suited to easy paces but its also capable of picking up the pace.
I've done all sorts of sports for all my life, often 5-7 times a week. From there I never let go. I want this shoe, but just a half-ounce to an ounce lighter. And while the shoe didnt excite me, it sure managed to impress me. Weve seen what 2021 has in store and its only getting better. ), but giving up some pop at toe-off (and the Nimbus Lite 2 doesnt have that much pop to spare) at the expense of the nearly 1.5 extra ounces for the Nimbus 23 in my size. Jeff: My pair of Nimbus 23 showed up the same day as the Nimbus Lite 2, so Ive been alternating my runs between them. But the 23 give me plantar like my 1080v10. It needs to be seen how many miles the FlyteFoam Propel will hold up, but outsole wise I think this thing will hold up for at least 500 miles for me as a runner who is on the lighter side. I enjoyed the Nimbus 23 most on relaxed runs at paces above 5.30 per kilometre while middle distances between 10 and 20 kilometres are in the Nimbus 23s wheelhouse. There is no lack of comfort. I noticed that Asics has a Gel Venture shoe, which is mainly for trail running and walking. My first run was 12km at an easy pace and I was really surprised with how comfortable and plush the ride of the Nimbus 23 felt. I dont see any likely early failure points from the exposed midsole up the center of the heel to the midfoot and in the lateral flex grooves in the forefoot - the rubber outsole extends far enough to really protect the midsole. I think there are too many shoes these days which slap so much protection at you, that you cant feel the street anymore. This shoe will not be wearing out anytime soon. The 22 works just great for me. Everything about it is perfection, from its true to size fit, to its spacious toe box, to its heel lockdown. This one has even more visible gel in the heel for extreme shock absorption. It has that premium look and feel which is in the same league as the Glycerin, Triumph and 1080. You should definitely give the Nimbus 23 a try! Lets get into it, and Ill tell you why this can work for you, and maybe why it wont. While the Triumph has better protection and the more modern / fun midsole material, the Nimbus runs much more naturally and achieves the fun factor through its awesome forefoot flex. Trying the same now, and still struggling. From teenagers just starting running, to experienced marathon runners, the Nimbus series appeals to a wide target market and you can be guaranteed to see dozens of pairs of Nimbus on your run along the banks of the Singapore River or around the Marina Bay. I took this shoe on a 10-mile run and several shorter runs. Feeling a bit awkward to write this after the other two guys are telling you how thick the tongue is. Its tongue is thick and padded: the type of tongue I want on a max cushioned trainer- not a flat, racing-inspired tongue like on the Vomero 15 and the MaxRoad 4+. I had to re-lace several times to get a proper lockdown without too much lace pressure. ASICS is still using an external GEL insert in the heel above a layer of FlyteFoam, and overall it works well. And if you liked the last version guess what? It seems a little lacking in forefoot protection, but giving it an extra 3-5mm of stack height is only going to make it heavier and even less inspiring. However, theyve begun to turn it around with some really nice releases this past year, including the ASICS Novablast, GEL-Kayano Lite, and GEL-Nimbus Lite 2. These 23s are the worst! If youre here, youre probably looking for a shoe that gets the job done. Jeff: While it is heavier than the Nimbus, Mizunos premium big mileage trainer has so much more bounce and protection and that it runs much lighter in feel than the Nimbus. This did not influence the outcome of this review, written after running more than 50 miles in them. The sensation that stood out the most was the squishy layer of foam directly underneath the insole which surrounded my feet and toes with every footstrike. No break in period was required. As shoe manufacturers have been trying to keep shoes lighter weve seen a drop in durability, but the Nimbus 23 outsole gives you protection everywhere it is needed and nowhere it isnt. Switched to Brooks. Nils: At first step in the Nimbus 23 felt like an even more comfortable Kayano. Has Asics changed enough on the Nimbus 23 to win me over and how does it compare to the other max-cushioned trainers? For the weight and the cost this shoe should either hold up better to 10+ mile runs or bring a smile to your face on every step, and it did neither for me. Asicss famous Trusstic (a plastic insert in the midfoot to help with torsion control) is different too. Decided to give the Gel Nimbus 23 a try. On the run, they have comparable feel, with the N23 giving just a little more squish underfoot than the lighter Nimbus Lite 2 (RTR Review), but giving up some pop at toe-off (and the Nimbus Lite 2 doesnt have that much pop to spare) at the expense of the nearly 1.5 extra ounces for the Nimbus 23 in my size. Jeff: Similar shoes with vastly different results, the Saucony has much more protection, and fun per step than the Nimbus. If you look closely at the two tone Flytefoam Propel midsole in the heel, the darker gray is much firmer, while the light gray has a little more give to it. I ran roughly 1000km in my first year, doubled and then tripled that number in 2018 and 2019. Its a solid daily trainer, but it wouldnt be my pick if mileage is going to stack up or the pace is going to pick up. It runs smoothly, with a good balance and nice geometry, but it doesnt have a great toe-off. Same here. The Flytefoam in the midsole of the Nimbus 23 definitely feels less dense and more lively than in any previous version: its now closer to the bouncy, energetic Flytefoam Blast foam used in the Novablast. There are some serious cutouts (aka flex grooves) in the outsole of the Nimbus 23. I love the look and feel of the 23s, but Im not sure if Ill be able to take them to 500M before switching. Not only did it feel really slippery on wet cobblestone and tile but the rubber got really squeaky and loud when wet. In the past, ASICS applied that line to all of its shoes, and the company got real stale. I had issues with the 21, so the 23 is a very easy recommendation for me. Not bad. Im a big fan of ASICS AHAR outsoles.
I had no issues. But this shoe aint broke, and theres no reason to overhaul it just yet. While I for sure think the ASICS Nimbus 23 runs just fine and smoothly I actually think that especially the toe off is outstanding for this shoe. I had a similar problem with the Nimbus 21s (oddly not the 22s), and used heel inserts to push thru. The gusseted tongue might be my favorite part of the shoe - it is on the thicker side, without going too thick, so if you need to crank down the laces, you can. Im not sure if that would be a better shoe for me. The 1080v10 has been one of my favorites of the last year. That is something the Nimbus 23 doesnt have. Jeff: Another trainer thats been on the way up for a few years, there isnt much the 1080v10 gets wrong. The last Nimbus that I used was the 19th version and I was really unimpressed with it. Its not as durable as the Triumph 18 but its definitely a plusher shoe with more squish. This makes the Nimbus 23 a decent climber and a shoe that runs much lighter than its actual weight might let you assume. The Saucony is more stable and would therefore be my choice as well but it really comes down to taste in my opinion.
2017 Road Trail Run. Still. As Jeff stated the forefoot flex is really outstanding! The generously foam-filled upper is the text-book max-cushioned trainer upper and its not an exaggeration when I say that its the most comfortable upper Ive ever worn. Its the least obtrusive TRUSTIC, but its a neutral shoe - why is there a plastic insert? It can handle a wider range of runs / paces. For that it is just too heavy. This plush, sink-in foam sensation which is similar to memory foam, is unique to the Nimbus and unlike any other shoe that Ive tested. Favoring comfort over speed or weight, the Nimbus has always been well cushioned and plush, but that has made it something of a chore to run in the past. I never had to worry about slowing down when turning corners and I never had to concentrate on striking on the forefoot or rearfoot. Its this: If youre getting into the game and want something that will last as long as the Fast and the Furious franchise while providing comfort and day-in and day-out reliability, the GEL-Nimbus 23 has all you need. The toebox is ample, without being incredible. Just bought a pair of gel nimbus 23 I could feel my arch more than my heal is that a good sign. As a neutral runner who supinates, this does literally nothing for me and Id love to be rid of it (if only for the weight savings) but it doesnt get in the way like it has in the past - massive step up. He is a marathon runner who eats, sleeps and dreams running shoes. Drop is 10 mm (25 heel/15 toe) for men, while the womens version is 13 mm (27 in heel, 14 in toe). What made it so enjoyable was the unique Nimbus underfoot squish and its supremely comfortable upper. But the 23s are a disaster, and like you I end up suffering after a few days running in them.
Hi! Up against the Nimbus the Glycerin has a noticeably more protection, and just a bit more bounce in the step. I didnt have a problem with it, but people who prefer lower drops will probably pass on this. The engineered mesh upper (made of 20% recycled materials) is great, as usual. The subtle changes it makes from the past really add to up to one of the best ASICS trainers theyve made in years - but while theyve been catching up, so has everyone else and this shoe lacks the surprising fun and/or incredible protection of so many others. Quick Strides: RTR Team Testing Notes, Race Reports and More! Fit is spot on true-to-size lengthwise, and with my slightly wider than D foot, I had no issues with width either. Thanks! Its now made from 20% recycled materials, and the fit has been adapted to be less generous than version 22. The Nimbus 23 would have been much more durable had the entire outsole been covered with AHAR+ like on the Asics Novablast. Hi Mark. Responsiveness is something that I didnt expect the Nimbus 23 to have but I found it to be slightly springy and I could push the pace below 5.15 per kilometre with relatively little effort. ROBBE: ASICS is staying true to the Nimbus, as it should, because it probably makes them tens of millions of dollars a year. When I first saw pictures of the then-unreleased Nimbus 23 online, it looked very similar to the Nimbus 22. RoadTrailRun receives a commission on purchases at the stores below. Head to head against the Nimbus Lite it resembles plush, but going up against other brands' big mileage daily trainers, it approaches the firm side of things. The Nimbus 23 upper uses an engineered mesh with several layers. Asics has gone all out with the nimbus to ensure it is the plushest ride possible. Legs felt great at all points during and after. Because of the excellent forefoot flex the shoe feels just natural to me - besides its amount of protection and weight. Nils: I think the Ride is the better comparison than the Triumph as it also comes with a great forefoot flex and therefore a more natural ride. Otherwise, the whole shoes make is okay. Even during these winter days where the streets get icy the Nimbus 23 gives me confidence. A tropical climate where the average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius and average humidity is 84% is not ideal for fast-paced running. I purchase Asics Gel Nimbus for walking not running and its always given me the support I need. Nils: I dont know what ASICS is measuring in regards to their stacks, but if I try to measure the midsole on the Nimbus 23 myself I can see at least 5-6mm more than ASICS is stating (15mm forefoot / 25mm heel) which likely is just the midsole stack and doesnt include the outsole and foot bed. I can feel some uncomfortable lace pressure at times. I had to re-lace several times to get a proper lockdown without too much lace pressure. I think their rubber formulas are along the grippiest and most durable on the market. Its another type of run feel (less rockered, more flex) for the Nimbus that might lead to different decisions.
